"A Risk-Based Approach to Process Risk Management" Presented at ASSE

AcuTechs David Moore was the featured speaker at the Bakersfield, California, chapter meeting of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) on August 5, 1999. The presentation explained the merits of developing a risk-based, decision-making process within a company to assist management in making challenging risk decisions with a more solid basis. The problem of relying solely on a minimum compliance regulatory model for defining a risk management process was explained. In particular, the EPA RMP Hazard Assessment may lead to questions or concerns from the public on the hazards that were reported to be possible. Since the risk of this exposure was not analyzed or explained, only a worst case and alternative case scenario presented, they may be unsure of the acceptability of the risks. Company management may not have a complete understanding of the more complete risk exposure to the community. Progressive companies are realizing the value of better defining the risks and in making more informed decisions on the need for additional risk reduction measures using modern risk assessment methods.
